Tungsten Compounds
Sodium tungstate is a white, opaque crystalline solid formed by the combination of sodium ions and tungstate ions. It exists in three crystalline forms: δ, γ, and β. The transition temperature from δ to γ is approximately 570℃, and from γ to β is approximately 585℃. Its relative density is 4.18 (at 18.5℃), and its melting point is 700℃. In hydrogen gas, it remains unchanged even when heated to 700℃, but transforms into metallic tungsten at 1100℃. When heated with chlorine gas, it becomes a yellow chlorine oxide. It reacts with strong acids (except hydrofluoric acid) to form water-insoluble yellow tungstic acid, reacts with phosphoric acid or phosphates to form phosphotungstic heteropolyacid complexes, and reacts with organic acids such as tartaric acid, citric acid, and oxalic acid to form corresponding organic acid complexes.
Sodium tungstate dihydrate, Na?WO?·2H?O, is a lustrous, extremely thin, colorless, orthorhombic, plate-like crystal. Its relative density is 3.23 (at 19℃), and its melting point is 698℃. It is stable in air, but becomes anhydrous when heated to 100℃. Its solubility in water is 82.5 g/100 g (20℃), and its aqueous solution is slightly alkaline (pH=8～9). It decomposes under acidic conditions, crystallizing out insoluble tungstic acid. The decahydrate is a colorless crystal. It readily transforms into a dihydrate above 6℃.
Uses
Mainly used in the manufacture of metallic tungsten, tungstic acid and tungstates, as well as dyes, pigments, inks, and electroplating. It is also used as a fire retardant and catalyst for textiles and cellulose.

Used as an analytical reagent, alkaloid precipitant, and waterproofing agent for textiles. Also used in the production of ammonium phosphotungstate and other tungsten compounds.
