4. Main Applications (Detailed)
2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (CAS 532-11-6), commonly known as MBT, is a versatile organic compound widely used in rubber industry, pharmaceutical synthesis, corrosion inhibition, and other fields due to its reactive thiol group and benzothiazole skeleton.
4.1 Rubber Industry (Primary Application)
MBT is a key vulcanization accelerator for natural rubber and synthetic rubbers (e.g., styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, butyl rubber). It accelerates the vulcanization process, shortens vulcanization time, reduces vulcanization temperature, and improves the physical and mechanical properties of rubber products (such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and wear resistance). It is often used in the production of tires, rubber hoses, rubber seals, gloves, and other rubber products. It can be used alone or in combination with other accelerators (e.g., sulfenamides, guanidines) to adjust vulcanization speed and product performance.
4.2 Corrosion Inhibitor
It is an effective corrosion inhibitor for metals such as copper, iron, steel, and zinc. It forms a protective film on the metal surface by chelating with metal ions, preventing metal corrosion in acidic, neutral, and weakly alkaline environments. It is widely used in metal processing fluids (cutting fluids, pickling solutions), cooling water systems, and oilfield water treatment to extend the service life of metal equipment. It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in electroplating processes to improve the quality of electroplated layers.
4.3 Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemical Intermediates
MBT serves as an important intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds, including antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-tumor drugs. Its thiol group and benzothiazole structure can be modified to synthesize derivatives with specific biological activities. It is also used in the production of fine chemicals, such as dyes, pigments, and organic sulfur compounds. Additionally, it is used in the synthesis of agricultural chemicals (herbicides, fungicides) to enhance their biological efficacy.
4.4 Laboratory Research Reagent
In scientific research, MBT is used as a research reagent in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. It is utilized in the synthesis of benzothiazole derivatives, the detection of heavy metal ions (e.g., copper, mercury), and the study of enzyme inhibition. It is also used as a ligand in coordination chemistry to form complexes with transition metal ions for catalytic reactions.
4.5 Other Applications
It is used as a stabilizer for polymers and plastics to prevent degradation caused by heat and light. It is also added to lubricants and greases to improve their anti-wear and anti-oxidation properties. In addition, it is used in the textile industry as a dyeing auxiliary to enhance the color fastness of fabrics.
