Applications
Flurbiprofen is a potent phenylpropionic acid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which exerts anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX), including both COX-1 and COX-2, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain and fever. It has the advantages of small dosage, high efficacy, fast onset and few side effects compared with other similar drugs, and is widely used in medicine, pharmaceutical research, chemical synthesis and other fields.
- Pharmaceutical Field: Clinically, it is mainly used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and degenerative arthritis, relieving joint pain, swelling and inflammation symptoms. It can also be used for relieving pain caused by trauma, sprains, tooth extraction and surgical operations, and for the treatment of eye inflammation after cataract and trabeculoplasty argon laser surgery, as well as preventing cystoid macular edema after lens extraction surgery. In addition, it is an important raw material for the preparation of flurbiprofen sodium ophthalmic solution and other pharmaceutical preparations.
- Pharmaceutical Research Field: As a classic NSAID, it is used as a research tool in the study of cyclooxygenase inhibitors, the structure-activity relationship of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and the development of new anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, providing a basis for optimizing drug efficacy and reducing side effects. Its S-enantiomer can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis and has both anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, while the R-enantiomer only shows analgesic activity, which is an important research direction for chiral drug development.
- Chemical Synthesis Field: It can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of flurbiprofen derivatives and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and its synthetic process is mature (prepared by oxidation, esterification, transesterification, hydrolysis and decarboxylation of 2-fluorobenzophenone). It is also used as a standard substance in pharmaceutical quality control and analytical chemistry experiments.
- Other Fields: It is used as a research reagent in biological experiments related to inflammation and pain, and as a raw material for the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs and health products.
Safety Information
- Hazard Category: Toxic and irritant (GHS hazard symbol: GHS06; hazard code: R23/24/25, R25; acute oral toxicity Category 3)
- Hazards: Toxic if ingested (H301: Toxic if swallowed). It is irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract; direct skin contact may cause redness, itching, dryness, and may cause systemic damage if it enters the blood through cuts, abrasions or lesions. Eye contact may cause temporary discomfort, conjunctival hyperemia and burning sensation; inhalation of dust may cause respiratory tract irritation, cough and chest tightness. Long-term or excessive use may affect platelet aggregation, prolong bleeding time, and there are reports of increased intraocular bleeding tendency after ophthalmic surgery application. It may also cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as dyspepsia and stomach discomfort, and occasional adverse reactions such as headache and skin rash; it may cause renal papillary necrosis in severe cases.
- Operation Precautions: All operations shall be carried out in a well-ventilated fume hood and under dark conditions (avoiding light); wear nitrile gloves, protective clothing, safety goggles and dust mask to avoid direct contact, inhalation of dust and accidental ingestion. Do not eat, drink or smoke during operation; clean the face and hands thoroughly after operation. The operation area shall be equipped with emergency rescue equipment and first aid drugs.
- Storage & Transportation Requirements: It shall be stored in a sealed double aluminum vacuum packaging or HDPE barrel with desiccant inside; the storage temperature shall be controlled at 2–8 ℃ (refrigeration) for long-term storage, protected from light, moisture and high temperature; the storage place shall be locked. Transportation shall avoid violent vibration, sun exposure and moisture, and shall be transported in accordance with the regulations of hazardous chemicals (UN 2811 6.1/PG 2), and shall not be mixed with food, feed and other items.
- Waste Disposal: Waste residues and contaminated packaging shall be disposed of in strict accordance with the management regulations of hazardous chemicals, and shall not be directly discharged into water bodies, soil or sewers; they shall be collected and treated by professional hazardous waste disposal institutions in accordance with local, regional, national and international regulations.
- First Aid Measures: In case of skin contact, immediately take off contaminated clothes, rinse thoroughly with plenty of soapy water and clean water for at least 15 minutes, and seek medical advice if there is discomfort; in case of eye contact, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice in time; in case of accidental ingestion, do not induce vomiting, do not feed anything to unconscious people, immediately call the poison control center or doctor, and take the product label to seek medical treatment immediately; in case of inhalation discomfort, move to a well-ventilated place, give oxygen if breathing is difficult, and seek medical advice immediately if symptoms persist.
