Applications
CAS 1317-35-7 (Trimanganese tetraoxide) is an important manganese oxide compound, belonging to spinel-type oxide, with excellent magnetic properties and chemical stability, widely used in electronics, materials, coatings, glass, ceramics and other industrial fields[2][6]. It is mainly used in the electronics industry as a key raw material for the production of soft ferrite[2][6]. Soft ferrite is made by mixing manganese, zinc, iron oxides in a certain ratio and sintering, which has a narrow remanence curve, can be magnetized repeatedly, and has high DC resistivity, which can avoid eddy current loss[2][6]. Based on these characteristics, it is widely used in the manufacture of magnetic cores, disks and magnetic tapes for storing information in computers, transformers and high-quality inductors for telephones, TV flyback transformers, magnetic recording heads, inductors, magnetic amplifiers, saturation inductors, antenna rods and other electronic components[2][6]. In the field of coatings, it can be used as a colorant for paints and coatings; the paint or coating containing trimanganese tetraoxide has better corrosion resistance when sprayed on steel surfaces compared with those containing titanium dioxide or iron oxide[2][6]. In the field of glass and ceramics, it is used in the manufacture of optical glass and low-temperature thermistors, and can also be used as a pigment for ceramics and glass to improve the color and performance of products[2][6]. In addition, it is also used in the production of battery materials (such as ternary battery materials, lithium manganate batteries, lithium iron manganese phosphate batteries, zinc-manganese batteries), as well as in electroplating, smelting, catalysts, mineral processing and other fields, playing an important role in promoting the development of related industries[6].
Safety Information
- Hazard Category: Irritant (GHS hazard symbol: GHS07; hazard statements: H315, H319, H335); it is a low-toxic substance, and long-term or large-scale contact may have potential hazards[2][4]
- Hazards: It is irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract; direct skin contact may cause skin irritation, such as redness, itching and dryness; long-term contact may lead to skin dryness and chapping[2]. Eye contact may cause severe eye irritation, including conjunctival hyperemia, burning sensation and corneal irritation, which may cause persistent discomfort if not treated in time[2]. Inhalation of dust may cause respiratory tract irritation, such as cough, chest tightness, sore throat and other discomfort symptoms, especially for people with respiratory system diseases, which may aggravate symptoms[2]. Acute toxicity: Mouse oral LD50 is about 965mg/kg, rat oral MLD is 500mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection LD50 is 1000mg/kg, intravenous injection LD50 is 238mg/kg, showing low toxicity[1]. Long-term exposure may affect the nervous system and hematopoietic system, and may cause manganese poisoning in severe cases.
- Operation Precautions: All operations shall be carried out in a well-ventilated environment; operators shall wear nitrile gloves, protective clothing, safety goggles and dust mask to avoid direct contact, inhalation of dust and accidental ingestion[1][2]. The operation area shall be equipped with dust collection equipment to reduce dust pollution. Do not eat, drink or smoke during operation; clean the face and hands thoroughly after operation to prevent residual dust from entering the human body through the mouth or skin[1]. Avoid contact with strong oxidants and strong reducing agents to prevent chemical reactions and generate harmful substances[2][6].
- Storage & Transportation Requirements: It shall be stored in a sealed HDPE barrel, plastic woven bag, composite bag or cardboard barrel (lined with plastic bag); the storage temperature shall be controlled at room temperature (15–30 ℃), protected from moisture and high temperature[1][2]. Transportation shall avoid violent vibration, sun exposure and moisture; it shall be transported in accordance with the regulations of general chemicals, and shall not be mixed with food, feed, strong oxidants and strong reducing agents[1][2]. Common packaging specifications include 1kg, 25kg, 50kg, 200kg, which can meet the needs of laboratory, small-scale production and industrial mass production[2][6].
- Waste Disposal: Waste residues and contaminated packaging shall be disposed of in strict accordance with environmental protection management regulations, and shall not be directly discharged into water bodies, soil or sewers to avoid environmental pollution[2]. The waste shall be collected and treated by professional hazardous waste disposal institutions in accordance with relevant regulations; when disposing, it shall be mixed with other inert substances to reduce environmental impact.
- First Aid Measures: In case of skin contact, immediately take off contaminated clothes, rinse thoroughly with plenty of soapy water and clean water for at least 15 minutes, and seek medical advice if there is discomfort; in case of eye contact, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice in time; in case of accidental ingestion, do not induce vomiting, keep the patient in a supine position, and seek medical treatment immediately with the product label; in case of inhalation discomfort, move to a well-ventilated place, rest and keep warm, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
- Safety Instructions: S26 (In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice); S36/37/39 (Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection); WGK
