Applications
Trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate is a highly efficient strong silylating agent and Lewis acid catalyst widely used in fine organic synthesis, pharmaceutical intermediate preparation and peptide synthesis. It can rapidly introduce trimethylsilyl protecting groups onto hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino and enol functional groups under mild conditions, effectively improving reaction selectivity and simplifying post-treatment procedures. It is commonly applied in the silylation of natural products, steroid compounds and chiral drug intermediates to protect active hydrogen groups and avoid side reactions during multi-step synthesis. As a powerful Lewis acid catalyst, it promotes Diels–Alder reaction, cyclization reaction, condensation and glycosylation reaction, and plays an irreplaceable role in carbohydrate chemistry and nucleoside synthesis. It is also frequently used in analytical chemistry for derivatization of hydroxyl and amino samples to improve gas chromatographic separation and peak shape, and serves as an important reagent in laboratory organic methodology research and process optimization.
Safety Information
This compound is a highly corrosive, moisture-sensitive and flammable liquid with strong irritation and corrosivity to human tissues. It reacts violently with water releasing corrosive trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, which can cause severe burns to skin, eyes and respiratory mucosa. Direct skin contact leads to chemical burns, redness, blistering and tissue necrosis; eye contact may cause severe corneal injury and even permanent visual impairment. Inhalation of vapor or fume irritates the respiratory tract, causing sore throat, cough, chest tightness and dyspnea, and may induce pulmonary edema in severe cases. Accidental ingestion results in severe corrosion of the digestive tract and gastrointestinal injury. All operations must be conducted in a well-ventilated fume hood with full personal protection including chemical splash goggles, acid-resistant gloves and protective clothing. Keep far away from flame, heat source and moisture; strictly avoid contact with water, alkali and amine substances. Store sealed under dry inert gas at low temperature, separated from incompatible chemicals. In case of leakage, absorb with inert dry material; waste and contaminated packaging shall be disposed of strictly in accordance with hazardous waste regulations to prevent environmental and water pollution.
