Applications
Farnesol is a natural acyclic sesquiterpene alcohol with excellent fragrance activity, biological activity and synthetic applicability, widely used in perfume industry, cosmetic formulation, pharmaceutical research and fine organic synthesis. It possesses soft floral and woody fragrance notes, commonly applied as a fragrance fixative and blending ingredient in high-end perfumes, skin care products and daily flavors, improving fragrance richness and lasting stability. In cosmetics and personal care field, it acts as a natural antibacterial agent, anti-inflammatory ingredient and skin conditioning additive, effectively inhibiting harmful microorganisms and soothing skin discomfort. In pharmaceutical and biochemical research, it exhibits anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and apoptosis-regulating effects, used as a tool compound for metabolic mechanism research and new drug development. It also serves as an important synthetic intermediate for preparing squalene, vitamin derivatives and terpene-based fine chemicals, and is widely adopted in synthetic route design and industrial process optimization in terpene chemistry.
Safety Information
Farnesol is classified as low-toxic irritant and skin sensitizer, requiring standardized protection and proper storage during handling and use. Inhalation of high-concentration vapor may cause mild irritation to respiratory tract, resulting in throat dryness, cough and slight dizziness, especially in poorly enclosed and poorly ventilated environments. Direct skin contact may cause redness, itching and mild allergic irritation; prolonged or repeated exposure may induce allergic dermatitis in sensitive populations. Eye contact can lead to conjunctival congestion, burning sensation and tearing, requiring immediate continuous flushing with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes. Accidental ingestion may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea and abdominal distension. All operations should be performed in a well-ventilated fume hood; operators shall wear nitrile gloves, safety goggles and protective mask. Store tightly sealed under nitrogen protection, away from strong oxidants, high temperature and direct sunlight. Waste liquid and contaminated packaging must be disposed in accordance with hazardous waste regulations, and arbitrary discharge into water and soil is prohibited to prevent environmental pollution and potential allergic health risks.
