The alapivalate ester moiety improves oral bioavailability; after absorption, it is hydrolyzed in vivo to release active ceftizoxime. It is used for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and otitis media.
