What is Bauxite? Bauxite's main component is hydrated alumina, a type of aluminum ore. It often appears yellowish-brown due to the presence of iron oxide. Bauxite is an important refractory material, widely used in the metallurgical industry. In the refractory materials industry, bauxite typically refers to bauxite ore with Al2O3 ≥ 48% after calcination and a lower Fe2O3 content. High-alumina bauxite clinker is calcined bauxite ore. High-alumina bauxite clinker is graded based on Al2O3 content, impurity content such as Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, MgO, K2O, and Na2O, as well as clinker bulk density and water absorption. Potassium, sodium, iron, calcium, silicon, magnesium, and titanium are harmful impurities that affect the quality of bauxite refractory materials. The presence of these elements reduces the refractoriness of the refractory material and makes it less corrosion-resistant.
The main minerals in bauxite clinker are gibbsite and high-alumina silica. The gibbsite content increases with the ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide. Minor minerals include rutile and shale. Small amounts of Baumé and dickite are also sometimes present. Based on the aluminum oxide content, high-alumina bauxite is generally classified into three grades and five levels, with the following content and color: Grade 1 (Special Grade): 85% or more, earthy gray or dark gray; Grade 1 (First Grade): 75-85%, earthy gray or dark gray; Grade 2 (Second Grade): 65-75%, white gray; Grade 3 (Third Grade): 50-65%, bluish gray; Grade 4 (Below 50%, bluish gray). Bauxite clinker belongs to sedimentary deposits, divided into terrestrial deposits and vein deposits. Terrestrial deposits are covered by hard red clay, accompanied by a thick layer of limestone, commonly known as "granular ginger stone." The ore body occurs in layers, covering a large area, extending for several kilometers along the strike. The thickness is generally 3-4 meters, but can reach 7-9 meters or more in some cases. The material is pure, with a hard and dense structure. The vein of bauxite is covered by limestone, with a small area and occurring in pits, generally several meters apart. Sometimes it is mixed with limestone, with a layer of fine red clay in between. The material is relatively coarse and not very pure.
Main Uses
(1) Aluminum smelting industry. Used in national defense, aviation, automobiles, electrical appliances, chemicals, and daily necessities.
(2) Precision casting. Bauxite clinker is processed into fine powder to make molds for precision casting. Used in military, aerospace, communications, instrumentation, machinery, and medical device sectors.
(3) Used in refractory products. High-alumina bauxite clinker has a refractoriness of up to 1780℃, strong chemical stability, and good physical properties.
(4) Alumina silicate refractory fiber. It has the advantages of light weight, high temperature resistance, good thermal stability, low thermal conductivity, low heat capacity, and resistance to mechanical vibration. Used in various industries such as steel, non-ferrous metallurgy, electronics, petroleum, chemicals, aerospace, atomic energy, and national defense. It is made by placing high-alumina clinker into a high-temperature electric arc furnace with a melting temperature of approximately 2000–2200℃, where it is melted at high temperature, blown by high-pressure and high-speed air or steam, and then cooled, resulting in pure white "cotton"—alumina silicate refractory fiber. It can be pressed into fiber blankets, boards, or woven into cloth to replace refractory bricks used as linings in high-temperature kilns in industries such as smelting, chemicals, and glass. Firefighters can use the refractory fiber cloth to make clothing.
(5) Using magnesia and bauxite clinker as raw materials, with the addition of appropriate binders, it is highly effective for casting integral linings for steel ladles.
