Product Description
Triphenylphosphine oxide, with CAS No. 791-28-6, is a high-purity organic phosphorus compound, also known as TPPO, Triphenyl phosphorus oxide or (C?H?)?PO. It is mainly produced as an oxidation product of triphenylphosphine (PPh?), and can also be synthesized through direct oxidation reaction of triphenylphosphine with oxidants. This product appears as a white crystalline powder, with uniform particle size, no visible impurities, and a slight characteristic odor. It has stable physical and chemical properties, with a rigid molecular skeleton and basic oxygen atoms, which can induce the crystallization of compounds that are difficult to crystallize by other methods, especially effective for substances containing acidic hydrogen (such as phenols). It is widely used in organic synthesis, pharmaceutical R&D, coordination chemistry, and material fields, serving as an organic synthesis intermediate, pharmaceutical intermediate, catalyst, extractant, and crystallization inducer, and is also used in fluorescent anti-counterfeiting powders, providing reliable support for industrial production, scientific research and related application fields.
1. Physical Properties
Triphenylphosphine oxide is a white crystalline powder, with uniform particle size, no visible impurities, and a slight characteristic odor. It has a molecular weight of 278.28 Da, a melting point of 154-158°C (corresponding to 427-429 K), and a predicted density of 1.194 g/cm3 at 20°C; its predicted boiling point is 462.9±18.0°C at 760 mmHg, and the flash point is 233.8±21.2°C, with a vapor pressure of 2.62×10?? mmHg at 25°C. It is soluble in ethanol and benzene, slightly soluble in hot water, and insoluble in petroleum ether; it has slight hygroscopicity, and long-term exposure to air or moisture may cause agglomeration, so it needs to be stored in a sealed and dry environment to maintain its stability. Its molecular structure is tetrahedral, similar to POCl?, with good crystallinity.
2. Chemical Properties
Chemically, Triphenylphosphine oxide is an organic phosphorus compound with a molecular structure composed of three phenyl groups connected to a phosphorus atom, and the phosphorus atom is double-bonded to an oxygen atom. It has stable chemical properties under normal temperature and pressure, and is not easy to decompose; its rigid molecular skeleton and the basicity of the oxygen atom enable it to induce the crystallization of compounds that are difficult to crystallize by other methods. It can coordinate with many "hard acid" metal atoms to form coordination compounds (such as tetrahedral NiCl?(OPPh?)?). It is the main oxidation product of triphenylphosphine, and many metal ions can catalyze the oxidation reaction of PPh? to TPPO; the oxidized triphenylphosphine can be regenerated by reaction with trichlorosilane. It is stable under normal storage conditions, but incompatible with strong oxidants, and extreme high temperature may cause slight decomposition.
3. Storage & Safety Properties
Storage: It should be stored in a sealed, dry, and light-proof environment at room temperature (20-25°C), avoiding moisture, dust, high temperature, direct sunlight and ignition sources. The packaging should be kept intact to prevent moisture absorption, contamination and agglomeration; it should not be mixed with toxic, harmful, corrosive substances and strong oxidants. When taking, minimize the contact time with air, and seal the packaging immediately after use to avoid performance degradation. No special requirements are needed for storerooms and receptacles, and it can be stored in a common storage facility without special restrictions.
Safety: It is an irritant substance, which may cause skin and eye irritation, and may cause respiratory discomfort if inhaled in the form of dust. Its NFPA ratings are health=1, fire=1, reactivity=0, with low acute toxicity and no carcinogenicity reported by ACGIH, IARC or NTP. When handling, wear appropriate protective equipment (gloves, goggles, dust mask), and operate in a well-ventilated environment, avoiding breathing dust, fume or mist, and minimizing dust generation and accumulation. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposure, and keep away from sources of ignition, taking precautionary measures against static discharge. In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water; in case of eye contact, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if present and easy to do) and continue rinsing. If irritation persists, seek medical advice. This product is for industrial, pharmaceutical R&D and scientific research use only, not for direct human consumption without formulation. Disposal should be consistent with federal, state, and local regulations.
