Glycerol formal, also known as glycerol acetal, is a high-purity mixture of isomers (mainly 60% 5-hydroxy-1,3-dioxane and 40% 4-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxolane) with CAS numbers 4740-78-7 (for the main isomer) and 99569-11-6 (for the isomer mixture). Its molecular formula is C?H?O? and molecular weight is 104.11 Da. It is a clear, colorless to almost colorless viscous liquid, prepared by the reaction of glycerol and formaldehyde under acidic catalytic conditions. It has excellent solubilizing and emulsifying properties, widely used as a cosolvent, emulsifier and excipient in pharmaceutical, veterinary, cosmetic and industrial fields, such as solubilizing water-insoluble compounds, drug delivery, and as an emulsifier for chemicals and dyes. It is also a preferred substitute for propylene glycol and glycerol in veterinary injections due to its low toxicity and good stability.
1. Physical Properties
Clear, colorless to almost colorless viscous liquid, no obvious odor, miscible with water and ethanol, insoluble in non-polar solvents. It has a specific gravity of 1.22 (20/20), refractive index of 1.445-1.455 (20°C), boiling point of 97°C (20 mmHg) or 194°C (760 mmHg), and flash point of 93°C; slightly sensitive to light and heat.
2. Chemical Properties
A mixture of cyclic acetal isomers, stable under normal storage conditions; it is a versatile solvent with dual solubility for polar and non-polar substances. It is prone to decomposition under extreme acid-base conditions or high temperatures, and incompatible with strong oxidants; it can enhance drug stability and solubility when used as a pharmaceutical excipient.
3. Storage & Safety Properties
Storage: Store at room temperature in a sealed, dry, cool and dark place (<15°C); avoid moisture, high temperature, direct sunlight and strong oxidants; store in a well-ventilated place and keep cool. Safety: Low-toxic with favorable safety profile, combustible liquid (GHS07, signal word: Warning). It may cause slight irritation; wear protective equipment (eyeshields, gloves) during operation; keep away from heat, sparks and open flames; for pharmaceutical, veterinary, cosmetic and industrial use only; dispose of according to relevant regulations.
