3,4-Epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate (CAS 2386-87-0), abbreviated as EEC, is a high-purity cycloaliphatic epoxy resin with the molecular formula C??H??O? and molecular weight 252.31 Da. It is also known as 7-Oxabicyclo(4.1.0)hept-3-ylmethyl 7-oxabicyclo(4.1.0)heptane-3-carboxylate. At room temperature, it exists as a colorless to pale yellow liquid, prepared by the epoxidation reaction of 3'-cyclohexenylmethyl 3-cyclohexene carboxylate with peracetic acid. It has excellent properties such as low viscosity, high thermal stability, good weatherability and adhesion, serving as a key reactive diluent, cross-linking agent and monomer in epoxy-based material formulation, widely used in electronics, aerospace, automobile, medical device and textile industries.
1. Physical Properties
Colorless to pale yellow liquid, with a density of 1.17 g/mL at 25 °C (lit.), refractive index of n20/D 1.498 (lit.), and flash point of 118 °C (closed cup) or 245 °F (closed cup). It has a melting point of -37 °C, vapor pressure of 0.002Pa at 25℃, and LogP of 1.34 at 20℃; it is slightly soluble in chloroform and dichloromethane, and slightly soluble in water.
2. Chemical Properties
As a typical cycloaliphatic epoxy resin, it has strong dilution ability, high glass transition temperature (Tg), low shrinkage and no oxygen polymerization inhibition. It is stable under recommended storage conditions, with good thermal stability and weatherability; it can undergo cross-linking reactions and is compatible with other epoxy resins. It is prepared by epoxidation of cyclohexene derivatives and can be used as a monomer for synthesizing polymeric gels.
3. Storage & Safety Properties
Storage: Store at 2-8°C in sealed, dry and light-proof condition; avoid moisture, high temperature, direct sunlight and incompatible materials; package with inert gas if necessary to prevent performance degradation[4][7]. Safety: Classified as GHS07 hazard category, signal word "Warning", with irritant properties (hazard symbol Xi). It may cause skin sensitization (H317) and harm to aquatic life (H412); wear appropriate protective equipment (gloves, eyeshields) during operation (safety instruction S36/37).
