Its IUPAC name is Disodium 2,2',2'',2'''-(ethane-1,2-diyldinitrilo)tetraacetate dihydrate. It usually appears as a white crystalline powder or granular solid, soluble in water, and insoluble in most organic solvents. As a versatile chelating agent, it can form stable complexes with most metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper), and is widely used in pharmaceuticals, food additives, water treatment, textile dyeing, cosmetics, and chemical analysis fields.
1. Physical Properties
White crystalline powder or granular solid; melting point 250 °C (decomposes); solubility 100 g/L in water at 25 °C, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether and chloroform; pH value 4.0–6.0 (1% aqueous solution, 25 °C); loss on drying 8.5–11.5%; stable under normal room temperature and dry conditions, easy to absorb moisture in humid air.
2. Chemical Properties
As a typical chelating agent, it has four carboxyl groups and two amino groups in its molecular structure, which can form stable 1:1 or 1:2 complexes with most metal ions (such as Ca2?, Mg2?, Fe3?, Cu2?) through coordination bonds. It is stable under neutral and weakly acidic conditions, and can be decomposed at high temperatures above 250 °C. It has good chemical stability and compatibility with most organic and inorganic substances, and does not easily undergo chemical reactions under normal use conditions.
