Product Description
Matrimid® 5218 (CAS: 104983-64-4) is a soluble thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) developed by Huntsman, formed by polycondensation of BTDA and DAPI. Fully imidized during manufacture, it has excellent thermal stability, high Tg, good chemical resistance and processability. It is widely used in gas separation membranes, high-performance films, coatings, composites, adhesives and aerospace/electronic components, and also acts as a flexibilizer.

Synthesis Method
- Monomers: 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 5(6)-amino-1-(4′-aminophenyl)-1,3,3-trimethylindane (DAPI/PIDA)
- Polymerization: Solution polycondensation in polar aprotic solvents (80–150 °C), followed by chemical/thermal imidization.
- Reaction Steps: Dissolve monomers, conduct polycondensation and imidization, precipitate, wash and dry to get the product.
