Product Description
2-Chloro-5-chloromethylthiazole (CAS: 105827-91-6), abbreviated as CCMT, is an important heterocyclic organic compound belonging to the thiazole derivative class. It is a key intermediate for the synthesis of second-generation neonicotinoid insecticides such as thiamethoxam and clothianidin, and is also widely used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical raw materials such as ritonavir (an HIV inhibitor). It exists as white to light yellow crystals or crystalline powder at room temperature, with high reactivity and broad application prospects in the pesticide and pharmaceutical industries.

- Application Type: Key intermediate for neonicotinoid insecticides (thiamethoxam, clothianidin) and pharmaceutical raw materials (ritonavir).
- Toxicity: Toxic by skin contact and ingestion; causes severe skin burns and eye damage; may cause skin allergic reactions; toxic to aquatic organisms with long-term effects.
Synthesis Method
- Raw Materials: 2-chloropropenyl isothiocyanate, chloroform, sulfuryl chloride (or chlorine, sulfonyl chloride).
- Synthesis Route: Addition-cyclization reaction using 2-chloropropenyl isothiocyanate as the main raw material, with chloroform as solvent and sulfuryl chloride as chlorinating agent.
- Reaction Steps: Add 2-chloropropenyl isothiocyanate and chloroform into a reaction flask, dropwise add sulfuryl chloride while maintaining the internal temperature at 30 °C; after dropping, react at room temperature for 2.5 hours (internal temperature rises to 36 °C); distill to remove solvent and residual sulfuryl chloride, dissolve the residue in dichloromethane, wash with sodium bicarbonate solution and water successively, dry, and distill under reduced pressure to obtain the product.
Storage & Safety
- Storage: Store in a sealed, cool, dry and dark place; recommended storage temperature 2–8 °C (or 0–10 °C); keep in inert atmosphere; avoid high temperature, heat, sparks and open flames.
