Chemical Properties
- Chemical Category: Inorganic oxide, chlorine oxide radical, also known as Chlorine monoxide, Chloro oxidanil, Oxygen chloride radical.
- Stability: Highly unstable under ambient temperature and pressure; decomposes easily at room temperature, especially when heated or shocked; can polymerize into dichlorine dioxide (Cl?O?) under certain conditions.
- Acid-Base Property: Amphoteric; reacts with water to form weak acid (hypochlorous acid) and weak base, showing weak acidity in aqueous solution.
- Hydrolysis: Reacts with water quickly to generate hypochlorous acid (HClO) and hydrochloric acid (HCl), the reaction is exothermic.
- Photostability: Sensitive to light, decomposes rapidly under strong ultraviolet light to generate chlorine and oxygen.
- Reactivity: Strong oxidizing property, can oxidize most reducing substances; reacts violently with flammable substances, organic matter and reducing agents; can be prepared by the reaction of chlorine and ozone.

Storage & Handling
- Storage: Store in a sealed high-pressure container filled with inert gas (nitrogen), placed in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated warehouse; away from sunlight, heat, flammable substances and reducing agents.
- Temperature: -20 – -10 °C (long-term); avoid room temperature storage; shelf life 6 months under proper storage conditions.
- Packaging: High-pressure steel cylinder packaging (10L/40L), filled with inert gas for protection, sealed and leak-proof.
- Precautions: Operate in a well-ventilated fume hood; wear gas mask, protective gloves, protective clothing and goggles; avoid inhalation of gas and direct contact with skin/eyes; keep away from ignition sources; do not mix with flammable substances and reducing agents; use dry powder fire extinguisher in case of fire; dispose of waste gas in accordance with environmental protection regulations.
Description
Chlorine oxide (ClO)(6CI,7CI,9CI) (CAS: 14989-30-1) is an inorganic chlorine oxide radical with the chemical formula ClO and molecular weight 51.45. It is a yellowish-green gas (purity ≥97.0% GC) with pungent odor similar to chlorine, highly unstable and strongly oxidizing. It can be prepared by the reaction of chlorine and ozone, and is widely used in disinfection, chemical synthesis and laboratory research. It is extremely unstable and needs to be stored in a sealed high-pressure container under low temperature and inert gas protection to avoid decomposition and dangerous reactions.
