Chemical Properties
- Chemical Category: Aromatic monoterpenoid, phenylpropene derivative, also known as anise camphor; main component of star anise and fennel essential oils.
- Stability: Sensitive to light, heat and air, prone to oxidation and polymerization when exposed; stable under sealed, cool and dry conditions; decomposes under strong acid/alkali or high temperature.
- Acid-Base Property: Neutral; does not react with common acids and bases under normal conditions, can be oxidized to p-anisic acid by KMnO?.
- Hydrolysis: Stable under normal storage conditions; no obvious hydrolysis; stable in neutral and weakly acidic environments.
- Photostability: Sensitive to light, long-term exposure to strong light will cause deterioration, affecting aroma and stability.
- Reactivity: Contains reactive carbon-carbon double bond, can undergo hydrogenation, oxidation and polymerization reactions; low toxicity (LD50 orally in rats: 2090 mg/kg); trans-isomer is safer than cis-isomer (cis-isomer content should be <0.5%).
Applications
- Food industry: Used as natural flavoring agent, widely used in beverages, candies, pastries and condiments, imparting anise flavor; ADI 0~0.6 (FAO/WHO, 1999), GRAS (FDA, §182.60, 2000).
- Pharmaceutical industry: Used as pharmaceutical intermediate and small molecule raw material, with certain biological activity, and can be used in the research and development of related drugs.
- Fragrance industry: Used in the formulation of daily chemical fragrances, such as soaps, detergents and cosmetics, to enhance the fragrance and improve the sensory experience.
- Chemical synthesis: Used as intermediate for the synthesis of other aromatic compounds, and can be further converted into various derivatives through hydrogenation, oxidation and other reactions.
- Other fields: Used in scientific research experiments, as a solvent and reagent in organic synthesis; also used in the preparation of feed additives and other products.
Storage & Handling
- Storage: Sealed, cool, dry and dark; away from sunlight, heat and air; avoid oxidation and polymerization caused by exposure to light and heat.
- Temperature: 2-30 °C for long-term storage; stock solution stored at -20 °C can be used for 1 month, at -80 °C for 6 months; shelf life 24 months under proper conditions.
- Packaging: Sealed glass bottle or aluminum drum (25kg/50kg); small packages adopt sealed aluminum foil bags, avoiding contact with air and light.
- Precautions: Flammable (flash point 90-92.2 °C), avoid open fire; avoid inhalation of vapor and direct skin/eye contact; wear protective gloves and goggles during operation; rinse with plenty of water immediately if contacted accidentally; dispose of waste in accordance with industrial waste regulations.
Description
trans-Anethole (CAS: 4180-23-8), also known as anise camphor, is a phenylpropene derivative with the molecular formula C??H??O and average molecular weight 148.20. It is a white crystalline solid below 23°C and a colorless to pale yellow liquid above 23°C (purity ≥98.0% GC), with characteristic anise-like aroma. It is a natural component of star anise oil, fennel oil and other essential oils, and can also be prepared by chemical synthesis. It has low toxicity and good flavoring properties, and is widely used in food, pharmaceutical, fragrance and chemical synthesis fields. It is sensitive to light, heat and air, so it should be stored in a sealed, cool and dark environment to prevent oxidation and polymerization, ensuring product stability and usability.
