Product Description
Aluminum phthalocyanine chloride (CAS: 14154-42-8), also known as Chloroaluminum phthalocyanine or Phthalocyanine chloroaluminum, is an aromatic macrocyclic compound with a central aluminum atom coordinated to a phthalocyanine ring and a chloride ion. It appears as a dark blue to violet powder, odorless, and exhibits strong light absorption in the red spectral region (λmax 680 nm). With excellent chemical stability and photophysical properties, it is widely used in pigments, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and optoelectronic materials, featuring high color fastness and photosensitizing activity.
Uses
Pigment & Dye Industry (Main Use): Used as a high-performance greenish-blue pigment (C.I. Pigment Blue 79) for inks, coatings, plastics, rubber, and printing pastes, featuring high color fastness, weather resistance, strong tinting strength, and good color uniformity. It can also be safely applied in toy paints, cosmetics, office supplies, and crafts due to its stable performance.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): Acts as a second-generation photosensitizer; selectively accumulates in tumor cells and generates cytotoxic singlet oxygen upon 670–750 nm light irradiation, inducing cancer cell apoptosis. Its unique photophysical properties make it a promising material in anti-tumor treatment research.
Optoelectronic Materials: Applied in organic solar cells, photoconductors, nonlinear optical materials, optical recording media, and electrochromic devices due to its conjugated π-electron structure and semiconducting properties. It is also used in photochemical research and related photodegradation experiments, such as the degradation of environmental pollutants like bisphenol A.

Physical & Chemical Properties
- Appearance: Dark blue to violet powder; odorless; no visible impurities.
- Melting Point: >300 °C (decomposition).
- Boiling Point: Not determined (decomposes before boiling).
- Density: Not explicitly reported; stable under ambient conditions.
- λmax: 680 nm (in solution).
- Solubility: Slightly soluble in DMSO and methanol; practically insoluble in water and non-polar solvents.
- Stability: Stable at room temperature in dry, inert atmosphere; sensitive to light and moisture; incompatible with strong oxidants; exhibits good thermal stability under proper storage conditions.
- Chemical Traits: Possesses a planar conjugated macrocyclic structure; exhibits high thermal and chemical stability; acts as a photosensitizer generating singlet oxygen under light; the central aluminum atom and chloride ion form a stable coordination structure, which is the basis for its photophysical and pigment properties.
- Toxicity: Harmful if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through skin (Xn, R20/21/22); may cause eye/skin irritation; no severe acute toxicity reported; avoid long-term or repeated contact.
Synthesis & Storage
- Synthesis: Prepared by refluxing phthalonitrile and anhydrous aluminum chloride at a molar ratio of 4:1 in a high-boiling solvent (e.g., quinoline) at 210 °C for 8 hours to obtain crude aluminum phthalocyanine, which is then purified by concentrated sulfuric acid treatment for 3 times, followed by drying and crushing processes to obtain the finished product. The product quality meets industrial and high-purity standards for different application scenarios.
- Storage: Sealed in dry, airtight containers; stored at room temperature in a dark, dry place under inert atmosphere (nitrogen or argon); avoid light, moisture, and direct sunlight; shelf life is about 2 years under proper storage conditions; keep away from strong oxidants and acidic substances.
- Safety: Operate in a well-ventilated environment; wear N95 masks, gloves, and goggles; avoid dust inhalation and skin/eye contact; wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling; if accidentally inhaled or in contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention if irritation persists; dispose of waste in accordance with hazardous chemical regulations.
