Appearance
Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid, with a slight characteristic odor and no visible impurities. It has good fluidity at room temperature, no turbidity or precipitation, and can solidify into a white crystalline solid when the temperature is lower than -15°C. The liquid remains stable in color and state under normal storage conditions, without discoloration, stratification or precipitation.
Physical Properties
Melting point: -20 to -15°C, it is a liquid at room temperature (25°C), and solidifies into a crystalline solid when cooled to below -15°C; the solid melts quickly when returned to room temperature, without residue or color change.
Boiling point: The vapor temperature is about 105-120°C, and the boiling point at atmospheric pressure is 220-225°C; it can be distilled under reduced pressure (below 60°C, 680 mmHg) to obtain high-purity products without obvious decomposition during distillation.
Density: 0.92 g/cm3 (25°C, liquid state), the density is stable under normal temperature and pressure, and changes slightly with the increase of temperature, which is consistent with the physical characteristics of common organic acids.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water (about 3.7 g/L at 25°C), the solubility in water increases slightly with the increase of temperature; it is easily soluble in ethanol, acetone, ether, chloroform and other organic solvents, and can be miscible with most organic solvents in any proportion.
Viscosity: Low viscosity at room temperature, easy to pour and transfer; the viscosity increases slightly when the temperature decreases, but it does not affect the normal use.
Chemical Properties
1. Acidity: It is a monobasic organic acid with weak acidity, and its aqueous solution is weakly acidic; it can react with strong bases (such as sodium hydroxide) to form corresponding salts (such as sodium valproate), and the reaction is mild and exothermic.
2. Decomposition: It is stable at room temperature and normal pressure, and decomposes slightly when heated to above 250°C; it can be decomposed into small molecular organic compounds by heating under specific conditions, and no obvious toxic fumes are released during mild decomposition.
3. Esterification: It can undergo esterification reaction with alcohols (such as methanol, ethanol) under the action of catalysts, forming corresponding esters, which is an important reaction for its industrial and pharmaceutical synthesis.
4. Stability: It is stable in dry air, not easy to oxidize or deteriorate; it does not react with common oxidants and reducing agents under normal conditions, but can be oxidized by strong oxidants to form corresponding oxides; it is stable when stored in a sealed state, and does not undergo chemical changes.
Usage
1. Pharmaceutical field: It is an important antiepileptic drug (also known as valproic acid), which can increase glutamatergic and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission, and is mainly used to treat various types of epilepsy and seizures; it can also be used to treat mania in bipolar patients and has certain anti-tumor and neuroprotective effects.
2. Biochemical reagent field: It is used as a standard reagent and analytical reagent in biochemical experiments, such as the research on drug metabolism pathways, the detection of related drug content, and the screening of pharmaceutical intermediates; it is also used as a reagent for chemical structure analysis (such as NMR detection).
3. Industrial and chemical field: It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of organic compounds, especially in the synthesis of pharmaceutical derivatives (such as sodium valproate, divalproex sodium) and fine chemicals; it was once used as an organic solvent in industry and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
4. Research field: It is widely used in medical and biological research, such as the research on the mechanism of epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, and the development of related drugs; it is for professional research, industrial and manufacturing use only, not for medical or consumer use.
Storage
Store in a sealed container, keep away from light, heat and open flames; store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse, the recommended storage temperature is below 15°C (room temperature storage is acceptable, but cool and dark environment is preferred). It should be stored separately from oxidants, alkalis and other substances, and should not be mixed for storage; avoid moisture and high temperature, and the storage period can reach 2 years under proper storage conditions.
Safety Overview
Hazard Category: Irritant (Xi); Harmful if swallowed (H302); Causes skin irritation (H315), serious eye irritation (H319) and respiratory irritation (H335); May damage fertility or the unborn child (H360). It is for professional manufacturing, research laboratories and industrial/commercial use only, not for medical or consumer use.
Safety Precautions
1. Personal Protection: Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, safety goggles and face protection when handling; avoid contact during pregnancy or nursing; ensure adequate ventilation in the operation area to avoid inhalation of vapor or mist.
2. Emergency Handling: If contact with skin, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water and remove contaminated clothing; if contact with eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if present) and continue rinsing, seek medical advice if discomfort occurs; if inhaled, move to fresh air immediately; if swallowed, call a poison center or doctor if feeling unwell.
3. Fire & Spill: Flammable liquid; use dry powder, foam, carbon dioxide or water spray to put out fire in case of fire; if spilled, isolate the contaminated area, clean up with appropriate tools and dispose of properly, avoid entering drains or water courses.
4. Disposal: Dispose of waste and packaging in accordance with local environmental regulations; do not discard at will, and entrust professional institutions for disposal if necessary; avoid environmental pollution.
