Basic Properties
Appearance: Colorless transparent liquid, with a faint fruity or ethereal sweet odor, uniform texture and no visible impurities. It has good fluidity at room temperature, no viscosity change under normal storage conditions, and remains transparent without turbidity or precipitation. The product has stable appearance, and will not change color or deteriorate under proper storage conditions.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; easily soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene and most other organic solvents. It has good compatibility with various polar and non-polar solvents, which is a typical characteristic of diester compounds, and can be used as a solvent or co-solvent in organic reactions.
Other properties: It has a refractive index of n20/D 1.4130-1.4150 (lit.); vapor pressure is low under normal temperature and pressure, with slight volatility; non-corrosive, and has no obvious corrosive effect on common metals and plastics; purity is usually ≥99.0% for industrial and laboratory use.
Chemical Properties
1. Stability: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; stable to light and heat; not easy to decompose, and has good chemical stability. It can be stored for a long time under proper conditions without obvious deterioration.
2. Reactivity: As a malonic acid diester, it has high reactivity due to the active methylene group at the C-2 position (pKa≈13). It can participate in various organic reactions, including hydrolysis, decarboxylation, alkylation, Michael reaction, Knoevenagel condensation and nitrosation reaction, and is a key intermediate in organic synthesis.
3. Incompatibility: Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agents, strong acids and strong bases; avoid mixed storage with these substances to prevent decomposition or side reactions; stable when mixed with common organic solvents, coatings and inks.
Usage
1. Pharmaceutical Industry: It is an important raw material for the production of pharmaceuticals such as pipemidic acid. It reacts with orthoformate and urea to produce pipemidic acid, which is widely used in the synthesis of barbiturates, quinolones and other drugssuperscript:3>.
2. Agrochemical Industry: Used as an intermediate in the synthesis of herbicides, pesticides and plant growth regulators, and plays an important role in the production of agrochemicals.

Storage
Store in a sealed container, keep away from light, heat and open flame; store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse, the recommended storage temperature is below 25°C. It should be stored separately from strong oxidants, strong reducing agents, strong acids and strong bases, and should not be mixed for storage; avoid long-term exposure to high temperature and sunlight to prevent slight volatilization. The storage period can reach 1-2 years under proper storage conditions; the common packaging includes 25kg/drum, 200kg/drum or 1000kg IBC drum.

Safety Precautions
1. Personal Protection: Wear disposable gloves and safety goggles when handling; avoid direct contact with skin and eyes; ensure adequate ventilation in the operation area, and avoid inhalation of vapor; wash hands thoroughly after handling.
2. Emergency Handling: If contact with skin, rinse thoroughly with plenty of flowing water for 5-10 minutes; if contact with eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if present) and continue rinsing, seek medical advice if discomfort occurs; if inhaled, move to fresh air immediately; if swallowed, drink plenty of water to dilute, call a poison center or doctor if feeling unwell.
