Product Description
3-Methyl-3-buten-1-ol (CAS: 763-32-6), also known as Isoprenol or Methallylcarbinol, is a volatile aliphatic alcohol with the molecular formula C?H??O. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid at room temperature, with a faint fruity odor. The compound is soluble in water (90 g/L at 25 °C) and miscible with most organic solvents (e.g., methanol, ethanol, toluene, acetone, and ether). It is mainly synthesized by the Prins reaction of isobutylene and formaldehyde under high temperature and pressure conditions, featuring both unsaturated double bond and active hydroxyl groups in its molecular structure. As a key organic intermediate, it is widely used in the synthesis of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and spices, with broad application prospects in multiple industrial fields.
Uses
Chemical Intermediate: Primary application as an intermediate in organic synthesis. It can be isomerized to 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol, which is a key raw material for synthesizing the pesticide ethyl methyl benzoate. It also serves as a starting agent for synthesizing the side chain TPEG polyether of polycarboxylate superplasticizers, playing an important role in the construction chemical industry.
Pharmaceutical & Pesticide Synthesis: Used in the synthesis of antiproliferative, antiandrogenic, and cytotoxic caffeic acid derivatives, as well as pyrethroid insecticides such as permethrin. It is an important raw material for the production of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, providing a key building block for the synthesis of bioactive molecules.
Spice & Flavor Industry: Due to its faint fruity odor, it is widely used in the production of spices and flavors, and also serves as a spice ingredient in the cosmetics industry. Additionally, it is naturally present in extracts of basil, thyme leaves, immature mangaba fruits, and some honey samples.
Other Applications: Used in the synthesis of dyes and other fine chemicals, and can undergo various chemical transformations (such as hydrogenation, oxidation, and nucleophilic substitution reactions) due to its unsaturated double bond and hydroxyl group, making it versatile in organic synthesis reactions.

- Stability: Stable under normal storage conditions, but flammable; incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, which may cause oxidation reactions. It is prone to polymerization under high temperature or light conditions, so it should be stored away from high temperature and direct sunlight; it is not resistant to strong acids and bases, and may undergo side reactions under extreme conditions.
- Toxicity: Low acute toxicity; may cause eye damage (H318) and is flammable (H226); GHS labeling: Signal word "Danger", Hazard statements H226, H318; Precautionary statements include P210, P233, P240, P241, P280, P305+P351+P338. It may cause mild skin irritation, and high concentrations of vapor may cause respiratory discomfort; it is non-toxic to aquatic organisms when properly disposed of. Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes eyeshields, faceshields, gloves, and type ABEK (EN14387) respirator filter.
Synthesis & Storage
- Synthesis: The main synthetic route is the Prins reaction of isobutylene and formaldehyde. The reaction is usually carried out under high temperature (200–300 °C) and high pressure (8–23 MPa) conditions, which can be carried out with or without catalysts (such as alkali metal phosphates, transition metal salts). The crude product is purified by rectification (theoretical plate number 25, top pressure 500 KPaG, top temperature 57 °C, bottom temperature 130 °C) to remove light components and heavy component tar, and the final product with a purity of up to 99.85% can be obtained. Other synthetic methods have the disadvantages of low conversion rate and many side reactions, so the isobutylene-formaldehyde route is the main industrial production method.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated flammable liquid warehouse; recommended storage temperature ≤25 °C. Packed in sealed glass bottles or high-density polyethylene plastic barrels, with a net weight of 20 kg or 200 kg per container. Avoid direct sunlight, high temperature, and open flames; keep away from strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, and strong bases; store separately from food, beverages, and oxidizable materials. Shelf life: 12 months when unopened and stored properly; use promptly after opening to prevent volatilization and polymerization; container should be sealed tightly after use. WGK Germany: 1; Storage Class: 3 - Flammable liquids; Customs Code: 2905290000.
- Safety: Operate in a well-ventilated area, away from fire and heat sources; no smoking during operation. Wear specified personal protective equipment (eyeshields, faceshields, nitrile gloves, respirator) to avoid skin and eye contact, and avoid inhalation of vapor. In case of skin contact, rinse the affected area with plenty of water for 15 minutes; in case of eye contact, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes and seek medical attention immediately. In case of fire, use dry sand, carbon dioxide fire extinguisher to put out the fire, and avoid using water to prevent splashing. Dispose of waste and contaminated containers in accordance with relevant environmental regulations; RTECS Number: EM9473100; TSCA: Yes.
