Product Description
Baicalin (CAS: 21967-41-9), also known as Baicalein 7-O-β-D-glucuronide, is a major bioactive flavonoid glycoside derived from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. It has the molecular formula C??H??O?? and appears as a yellow to pale yellow crystalline powder. Renowned for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, and hepatoprotective properties, baicalin is widely utilized in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food additive industries, as well as in biochemical research.
Uses
Pharmaceutical Industry: Employed as a key active ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine preparations and modern pharmaceuticals for treating inflammatory diseases (e.g., hepatitis, enteritis), viral infections (e.g., influenza, herpes), and liver injuries. It also serves as an adjunct therapy for cardiovascular diseases due to its antioxidant and blood lipid-regulating effects.
Cosmetic Industry: Added to skincare products for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin-brightening properties, helping to reduce acne, soothe sensitive skin, and inhibit melanin production.
Biochemical Research: Used as a standard reference substance, research reagent, and pharmacological tool compound to study flavonoid metabolism, anti-inflammatory mechanisms, and antiviral pathways in vitro and in vivo.
Food & Beverage Industry: Applied as a natural antioxidant and preservative in functional foods and health beverages to enhance stability and extend shelf life.

- Chemical Structure: A flavonoid glycoside composed of baicalein (aglycone) linked to a β-D-glucuronic acid moiety at the 7-hydroxyl group. The structure consists of a flavone backbone with hydroxyl groups at C5, C6, and C7, and a phenyl group at C2. The glucuronic acid residue enhances water solubility and biological activity.
Physical & Chemical Properties
- Appearance: Yellow to pale yellow crystalline powder; odorless; slightly bitter taste.
- Density: 1.737±0.06 g/cm3 (predicted); Melting Point: 202–205°C (dec.); Specific Rotation: [α]2?/D ?83° to ?86° (c=1, DMSO); pKa: 2.72±0.70 (predicted).
- Solubility: Soluble in DMSO (≥100 mg/mL), DMF, pyridine, and alkaline aqueous solutions (e.g., NaHCO?, NaOH); slightly soluble in hot acetic acid; sparingly soluble in methanol, ethanol, and acetone; practically insoluble in water (≈0.1 mg/mL), ether, benzene, and chloroform.
- Stability: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; light-sensitive and hygroscopic; decomposes at temperatures above 205°C; unstable in strong alkaline solutions (darkens gradually); incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
Synthesis & Storage
- Synthesis: Mainly produced by extraction and purification from Scutellaria baicalensis roots (using ethanol-water reflux extraction, followed by acid precipitation and recrystallization). Chemical synthesis is also available via glycosylation of baicalein with glucuronic acid derivatives.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area at 15–25°C; keep tightly sealed in light-resistant containers to prevent moisture absorption and light exposure. Packed in 10g, 50g, 250g sealed glass bottles (laboratory grade) or 25kg cardboard drums lined with polyethylene bags (industrial grade). Avoid direct sunlight, high temperature (>30°C), and contact with oxidants, strong acids, and strong bases; keep away from food, feed, and children. Shelf life: 24 months if unopened and stored properly.
- Handling Precautions: Use in a well-ventilated area; wear nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing. Avoid inhalation of dust and contact with skin and eyes. May cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. In case of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water; in case of eye contact, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists. In case of ingestion, drink plenty of water and seek medical attention. Dispose of waste in accordance with local regulations; do not discharge directly into the environment or sewers.
