Product Description
Acid Red 73 (CAS: 5413-75-2), also known as Brilliant Crocein, Crocein Scarlet 3B or C.I. 27290, is a synthetic sulfonated disazo dye with the molecular formula C??H??N?Na?O?S?. It appears as a yellow-light red to dark red powder, odorless, with good water solubility and strong colorability, widely used in textile, paper, leather and other industrial fields.
Uses
Textile Industry: Core colorant for protein fibers (wool, silk) and polyamide fibers, imparting bright scarlet shade.
Paper & Leather Industry: Colorant for specialty paper, cardstock and leather products, ensuring vivid and uniform coloration.
Other Industries: Used in water-based inks, wood stains, plastic coloring, and as a biological stain in laboratory histology tests; not approved for food or cosmetic use.
Molecular Formula & Structure
Chemical Substance Information
Acid Red 73 is a synthetic disazo dye chemical substance, belonging to the class of acid dyes. It is stable under normal conditions but light-sensitive in solution, with slight irritation; proper handling and storage are required to avoid environmental pollution and human discomfort.
- Molecular Formula: C??H??N?Na?O?S?
- Molecular Weight: 556.48 g/mol
- CAS Number: 5413-75-2
- Synonyms: Brilliant Crocein; Crocein Scarlet MOO; C.I. 27290; EC Number: 226-502-1; MFCD00003907
- Chemical Structure: A disodium salt of 7-hydroxy-8-((4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenyl)diazenyl)naphthalene-1,3-disulfonate, with two azo groups (-N=N-) that provide its intense red color, and sulfonate groups enhancing water solubility.
Physical & Chemical Properties
- Appearance: Yellow-light red to dark red powder, odorless, fine uniform particles.
- Density: 1.58 g/cm3; λmax: 508 nm (aqueous solution); pH Stability: Acidic to neutral (pH 3-9).
- Solubility: Soluble in water (forming bright red solution), ethanol and acetone; insoluble in ether, benzene and other non-polar organic solvents.
- Stability: Stable under normal temperature and pressure; incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and strong bases; reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to form red-purple solution (dilutes to red-brown precipitate), and with nitric acid to show color change from blue to orange to olive.
Synthesis & Storage
- Synthesis: Produced via diazotization and coupling reactions—4-(phenyldiazenyl)benzenamine is diazotized in acidic conditions (0-5°C), then coupled with 7-hydroxynaphthalene-1,3-disulfonic acid (G acid) in alkaline medium, followed by salting out, filtration and drying.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area at 15–25°C, keep tightly sealed in moisture-proof and light-resistant containers to prevent moisture absorption and light-induced fading; avoid contact with strong acids and oxidants.
