2.2 Chemical Properties
- Saturated long-chain carboxylic acid structure: Single terminal carboxyl group, no carbon-carbon double bonds
- Esterification reaction: Reacts with methanol, ethanol, glycerol, polyglycerol to produce fatty acid esters (emulsifiers, lubricants)
- Saponification: Neutralizes with sodium/potassium hydroxide to form laurate soap surfactants
- Amidation: Condenses with amines to generate lauramide diethanolamine (foaming agent, thickener)
- Acid & Alkali Stability: Stable in neutral and weak acid environment; reacts rapidly with strong alkali to form soap salts
- Thermal Stability: Resists oxidation at medium temperature; long-term heating above 150 °C causes slight yellowing and oxidation
- Photostability: Slightly yellow after long-term strong light exposure
- Compatibility: Compatible with most oils, nonionic surfactants; incompatible with alkaline mineral fillers, strong oxidants
