Chemical Properties
- Super strong electrophilic sulfonylating reagent, stronger reactivity than triflic acid
- Hydrolysis reaction: Instantly reacts with water to generate trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid) and release heat
- Sulfonylation / triflation: Converts alcohols, phenols, ketones, amides into corresponding triflate esters; widely used to introduce OTf leaving group
- Lewis acid property: Forms strong acid complex with ethers, nitriles, promotes cyclization, rearrangement, Friedel-Crafts reactions
- Reactivity with nucleophiles: Violent exothermic reaction with primary/secondary amines, alcohols, all protic polar solvents
