Physical Properties
- Appearance: White or off-white flaky, granular or powdery solid, odorless
- Solubility: Only soluble in hot water (80–95℃); insoluble in cold water, ethanol, acetone, benzene, mineral oil and other organic solvents
- Density: 1.26–1.31 g/cm3
- Glass transition temperature Tg: 75–85℃
- Melting decomposition: Starts to decompose around 200℃, no stable melting point
- Hygroscopy: Strongly hygroscopic under high humidity environment
- Film-forming property: Excellent film-forming ability; formed film is transparent, tough, oil-resistant and gas barrier
- Surface tension: Aqueous solution reduces surface tension, good wetting and adhesion
- Classification index: Differentiated by alcoholysis degree (87–89%, 99% etc.) and viscosity degree
Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Linear polymer with a large number of hydroxyl groups on the carbon main chain, hydrophilic polar groups
- Alcoholysis classification: Partial alcoholysis PVA retains a small amount of acetate groups; fully alcoholysis PVA has almost all hydroxyl groups
- Crosslinking reaction: Hydroxyl groups can crosslink with borax, glutaraldehyde, tetrabutyl titanate, boric acid to form water-resistant gel
- Esterification/etherification: Reacts with organic acids, acid anhydrides to generate PVA ester derivatives
- Thermal decomposition: Above 200℃ dehydration occurs, generates conjugated polyene and turns yellow/brown; carbonized above 250℃
- Acid-base stability: Stable in neutral and weak alkaline solutions; concentrated strong acid causes degradation and hydrolysis; strong alkali has little corrosion at room temperature
- Biodegradability: Low molecular weight PVA can be biodegraded by microorganisms
- Compatibility: Compatible with starch, gelatin, cellulose, water-based resins; incompatible with strong oxidants, borax in high dosage without control

1. Textile Industry (Core Application)
- Warp sizing agent: Sizing for cotton, polyester, yarn to improve tensile strength, reduce breakage rate, easy desizing
- Fabric finishing agent, coating adhesive for non-woven fabrics
2. Water-based Coating & Adhesive
- Environmentally friendly water-based glue: Paper glue, wood glue, wallpaper adhesive, office solid glue
- Protective colloid for emulsion polymerization (polyvinyl acetate latex, acrylic emulsion stabilizer)
- Water-based paint film-forming auxiliary, pigment dispersant
4. Paper Industry
- Surface sizing agent for paper, improve paper smoothness, printability and oil resistance
- Coating binder for coated paper, coated cardboard
