- Appearance: White fine crystalline needle powder
- Odor: Odorless, slight sour taste
- Solubility: Slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water, ethanol, methanol, acetone, ether, propylene glycol; insoluble in benzene and petroleum ether
- Melting Point: 158–161 °C
- Sublimation property: Sublimes easily at 76 °C under normal pressure
- Hygroscopicity: Non-hygroscopic under normal ambient humidity
- UV absorption: Obvious characteristic absorption peak at 297 nm in ethanol solution
Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Aromatic carboxylic acid with ortho phenolic hydroxyl group on benzene ring
- Acid-base characteristic: Weak organic acid, reacts with alkali to form soluble salicylate salts
- Esterification reaction: Reacts with methanol to produce methyl salicylate (wintergreen oil)
- Color reaction: Forms purple complex with ferric ions, used for qualitative identification
- Keratolytic activity: Dissolves intercellular lipid of keratin, exfoliates cutin and unclogs pores
- Thermal stability: Stable below 140 °C; intramolecular dehydration occurs above melting point to generate salicylide
- Compatibility: Compatible with most cosmetic and pharmaceutical excipients; incompatible with heavy metal salts, strong oxidants and high-concentration alkaline substances
