- Appearance: White crystalline powder or granular crystal
- Odor: Odorless or with slight benzoic acid faint odor, mild sweetish astringent taste
- Solubility: Freely soluble in water; soluble in methanol, ethanol; slightly soluble in glycerol; insoluble in ether, benzene

Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Sodium salt of benzoic acid, consists of benzene ring and carboxylate sodium group
- Antiseptic mechanism: Under acidic conditions converts to free benzoic acid, which inhibits microbial cell respiration and enzyme activity, suppressing bacteria, yeast and mold
- Acid reaction: Reacts with inorganic acid to precipitate benzoic acid white crystals
- Thermal stability: Stable below 120 °C; decomposes above 200 °C to release volatile aromatic substances
- Photostability: Stable under normal light, no obvious discoloration after long-term sealed storage
