Physical Properties
- Appearance: Anhydrous product is white crystalline powder; octadecahydrate is colorless translucent flakes or granules
- Odor: Odorless, slightly astringent taste
- Solubility: Soluble in water; insoluble in ethanol, acetone and other organic solvents
- Aqueous solution pH: Weakly acidic (pH≈3.0–4.0) due to aluminum ion hydrolysis
- Melting Point: Anhydrous decomposes above 770 °C without distinct melting point
- Hygroscopicity: Hydrated form is moderately hygroscopic; easily absorbs moisture in humid air
- Crystal morphology: Rhombic crystal for hydrated aluminum sulfate
Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Ionic inorganic salt composed of Al3+ cations and sulfate anions
- Hydrolysis reaction: Al3+ hydrolyzes in water to generate aluminum hydroxide colloids with strong adsorption capacity
- Double salt formation: Reacts with alkali metal sulfate to form alum double salts such as potassium alum and ammonium alum
- Precipitation reaction: Reacts with alkaline substances to precipitate white aluminum hydroxide; excess strong alkali dissolves precipitate to form aluminate
- Thermal stability: Hydrate gradually loses crystal water when heated; anhydrous decomposes at high temperature into Al2O3, SO3 and SO2
- Compatibility: Compatible with neutral inorganic raw materials; incompatible with strong alkalis, carbonate salts and phosphate salts

1. Water Treatment Coagulant (Core Application)
- Municipal tap water, industrial wastewater and sewage flocculant; removes suspended solids, turbidity and phosphate pollutants via aluminum hydroxide floc precipitation
- Sludge dewatering auxiliary for sewage treatment plants
2. Papermaking Industry Auxiliary
- Paper sizing agent, combines with rosin size to fix on paper fiber and enhance water resistance
- Paper pulp clarifier for removing impurities
3. Textile Dyeing Auxiliary
Mordant for cotton and silk dyeing; improves dye adhesion and color fastness of fabrics
4. Industrial & Agricultural Raw Materials
- Soil acidifier for alkaline farmland to adjust soil pH and supplement aluminum element
- Raw material for producing alum, fire retardant, concrete waterproof agent and leather tanning agent
5. Cosmetic & Pharmaceutical Excipient
Astringent additive in external skin care products and antiperspirant formulations
