Methylcyclopentadienylmanganese Tricarbonyl (MMT)
1. Basic Information
Name: Methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl
Abbreviation: MMT
CAS No.: 12108-13-3
Molecular Formula: C?H?MnO?
Molecular Weight: 218.09
Category: Organomanganese gasoline antiknock additive, fuel combustion catalyst, lubricant additive, organometallic synthetic reagent
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical Properties
- Appearance: Orange to amber oily liquid at room temperature
- Odor: Mild special organometallic ester odor
- Solubility: Fully miscible with gasoline, diesel, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethanol, ketones; insoluble in water
- Melting Point: ?1 ℃
- Boiling Point: Sublimes under vacuum, decomposes at normal pressure above 230 ℃
- Density (20℃): 1.38–1.40 g/cm3
- Refractive Index n?2?: 1.580–1.590
- Flash Point: 110 ℃
- Hygroscopy: Non-hygroscopic
- Aqueous property: Stable against neutral water; slow hydrolysis under strong acid/strong alkali heating, releasing manganese hydroxide and carbon monoxide
Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Sandwich half-sandwich organomanganese complex, methylcyclopentadienyl ligand coordinated with Mn central atom, three carbonyl groups bonded to manganese
- Antiknock core performance: Manganese element forms oxide free radicals during fuel combustion, eliminates peroxides, raises gasoline octane number, replaces lead-based antiknock agents
- Thermal decomposition: Decomposes above 200 ℃ to release CO, manganese oxide fine particles; assists complete fuel combustion, reduces carbon deposit
- Photolysis characteristic: UV light breaks metal-carbonyl bonds, liquid darkens, loses antiknock activity
- Redox activity: Central manganese can undergo valence state conversion; reacts with strong oxidants to produce manganese dioxide precipitate
- Compatibility: Compatible with hydrocarbon fuels, common fuel additives; incompatible with strong acid, strong oxidants, halogenated solvents
- Metal surface protection: Moderate lubricating property, reduces engine cylinder wear
3. Main Application Fields
1. Gasoline Antiknock Additive (Core Application)
Environmentally friendly lead-free octane booster; improves gasoline RON/MON value, inhibits engine knocking, reduces tailpipe carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions
2. Fuel Combustion Catalyst
Added to diesel, heavy fuel oil to promote full combustion, lower soot and carbon deposit generation
3. Lubricant & Grease Additive
Organomanganese wear-resistant auxiliary, enhances anti-friction performance of internal combustion engine lubricants
4. Organometallic Synthetic Reagent
Precursor for manganese-based catalyst, metal vapor deposition raw material, coordination chemistry research substrate

Safety Warning
Toxic organomanganese liquid with strong irritation. Vapor and liquid severely irritate eyes, skin and respiratory tract; long-term repeated inhalation causes manganese accumulation poisoning, damaging central nervous system. Thermal decomposition releases toxic carbon monoxide gas. All operations must be carried out in explosion-proof fully ventilated fume hood with gas-proof respirator, anti-splash UV shielding goggles and thick oil-resistant nitrile gloves. Strictly avoid light, high temperature, open flame and contact with strong oxidants/strong acids. Waste liquid collected separately for incineration recovery of manganese; waste classified as toxic organometallic hazardous waste, handled by qualified professional institutions.
Note: Strictly control the addition ratio in fuel, comply with national fuel additive limit standards to avoid excessive manganese residue in exhaust.
