Molecular Weight: 300.48
Category: Hydroxy fatty acid raw material, lithium grease thickener, wax modifier, cosmetic thickener, paint coating anti-settling agent
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical Properties
- Appearance: White or off-white waxy flake / granular solid
- Odor: Faint mild fatty acid odor
- Solubility: Soluble in hot ethanol, toluene, xylene, mineral oil, ester solvents; slightly soluble in cold organic solvents; almost insoluble in water
- Melting Point: 70–76 ℃
- Density (20℃ solid): 0.98 g/cm3
- Hygroscopy: Non-hygroscopic under normal humidity
- Aqueous property: Insoluble in water, weak acidity when dissolved in alcohol; stable neutral water environment
Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Long saturated alkyl chain with carboxyl group at terminal and hydroxyl group at C12 carbon, dual functional groups of -COOH and -OH
- Saponification & Salt formation: Reacts with lithium hydroxide to produce lithium 12-hydroxystearate, core thickener for high-temperature lithium grease
- Esterification: Hydroxyl and carboxyl groups can undergo esterification with alcohols to synthesize synthetic wax, lubricant esters
- Self-crosslinking: Under heating and catalyst conditions, intermolecular esterification occurs to form polyester wax with high hardness
- Thermal stability: Stable below 150 ℃; above 200 ℃ dehydration occurs to generate unsaturated stearic acid
- Photostability: Good light resistance, no discoloration under long-term light exposure
- Compatibility: Compatible with mineral oils, synthetic esters, waxes, resin coatings; incompatible with strong alkali under high temperature (easy saponification)
3. Main Application Fields
1. High Temperature Lithium Grease Thickener (Core Application)
Synthetic lithium soap thickener raw material; lithium grease made from it features high dropping point, anti-oxidation, water resistance, wide temperature range lubrication
2. Synthetic Wax & Plastic Modifier
Raw material for high-melting-point synthetic ester wax; used for plastic lubricant, anti-blocking agent, pigment dispersant
3. Cosmetic Raw Material
Thickening, gelling agent for lip gloss, cream, ointment; improves texture and stability of oil-based cosmetics
4. Coatings & Inks
Anti-settling agent, anti-sagging auxiliary for solvent-based paint, offset ink; improves pigment suspension performance
5. Metal Processing Lubricant
Additive for drawing oil, cutting oil, provides extreme pressure lubrication and anti-rust performance

Safety Warning
Mild low-irritation fatty acid solid. Dust slightly irritates eyes and respiratory tract; molten high-temperature liquid may cause mild skin burns. All operations in ventilated workshop with dust mask and nitrile gloves; avoid high-temperature molten splashing. Waste can be recycled by esterification recovery; residual waste belongs to general organic fatty chemical waste.
