Myrcene
1. Basic Information
Name: Myrcene
Alias: β-Myrcene, 7-Methyl-3-methylene-1,6-octadiene
CAS No.: 123-35-3
Molecular Formula: C??H??
Molecular Weight: 136.24
Category: Terpene flavor raw material, synthetic fragrance intermediate, fine chemical solvent, plant extract monomer
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical Properties
- Appearance: Colorless transparent oily liquid
- Odor: Fresh balsamic, resinous, mild citrus and hop-like green aroma
- Solubility: Miscible with ethanol, propylene glycol, mineral oil, toluene and most perfume solvents; insoluble in water, glycerin
- Boiling Point: 166–168 °C (760 mmHg)
- Density (20 °C): 0.790–0.794 g/cm3
- Refractive Index nD20: 1.465–1.469
- Flash Point: 44 °C
- Hygroscopy: Non-hygroscopic
- Aqueous property: Neutral non-polar terpene hydrocarbon, stable in neutral cold water at room temperature
Chemical Properties
- Molecular structure: Acyclic monoterpene with three carbon-carbon double bonds, high unsaturation
- Addition reaction: Undergoes hydrogenation, hydroformylation, epoxidation, Diels-Alder addition to synthesize linalool, geraniol, citronellol and other high-value fragrances
- Oxidation susceptibility: Easily oxidized by air; long-term exposure generates peroxides, resinification and yellow discoloration
- Polymerization tendency: Auto-polymerizes under heat, light or peroxide catalysis to form viscous terpene resin
- Photostability: Strongly light-sensitive; UV exposure accelerates oxidation and impurity generation
- Thermal stability: Stable below 100 °C; prolonged heating near boiling point triggers oxidation and polymerization
- Compatibility: Compatible with all non-polar fragrance oils and hydrocarbon solvents; incompatible with strong oxidants
